With Sony's new version of their "LocationFree" Base Station (LF-B20), mobile does not mean simply the ability to watch DVDs or encoded video on your laptop or iPod, but the power to control your own home video center--and watch everything on it--from any place you can find a high-speed Internet connection. Sony has created an amazingly simple device that essentially allows you to bring your TV and DVD player in your bag along with you wherever you may roam.

How it Works
The LocationFree Base Station connects to your TV, DVD Player, or DVR via standard audio/video cable or S Video. It then uses your home broadband connection to send the TV programs or movies of your choice over the Internet to your Windows or Mac laptop or Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP)--to any location in the world you happen to find a high-speed Internet connection (for example to the airport where you are waiting for that flight that has been delayed now for the second time). For Pocket PC and Windows Smartphone users, Sony says software for Windows Mobile powered devices is coming soon.

To control the Base Station remotely you will need to install the included LocationFree Player software on the laptop you intend to use. The PSP connection requires no additional hardware. Changing channels on your TV, cable box, or DVR is accomplished via an IR (infrared) Blaster connected to the BaseStation and then positioned on your cable box or DVR so that it can zap the infrared reciever with your laptop, just as you would from the couch with your remote.

Setting Your TV Free
The quick setup guide, along with the included software wizard, are very easy to follow. Within 20 minutes of opening the box we were watching ESPN on a PC laptop. There are two basic methods by which you can connect the LocationFree Base Station to the Internet: with an Ethernet cable straight into your router or hub, or--if you have home wireless--you can connect via Wi-Fi, using the Base Station as an access point.

LocationFree lets you view live TV programs, saved DVR programs, and much more on a wide range of devices. All you need is a broadband Internet connection.

The second method is particularly useful if your modem and media center are not located in close proximity. It also separates the new Base Station from its older version, as well as from all models of its main competitor, Sling Media's Slingbox. Setup works like this: 1) Connect your computer to the Base Station with an Ethernet cable (this is required for initial setup, but if you have home Wi-Fi you can remove this cable later). 2) Connect the sleek black box to power and turn it on. 3) Run the software wizard on your computer. This will guide you through the process of connecting the Base Station to the Internet. At this point you are also able to apply whatever wireless security protocols you may have in place on your network. We had no problems at all making a connection with a Wi-Fi router and cable modem. Once that connection is made you are ready to go mobile!

Going Mobile
Once at your favorite cafe or airport, just run the LocationFree software and let it make the connection. Video is then displayed in a window that is easy to size however you like. Changing channels is accomplished with a virtual remote that you can bring up on your screen whenever you need it. We set it up to control a Motorola cable box simply by choosing the brand name and type of device from a drop-down menu. The LocationFree and IR blaster did the rest. You are able to setup two remotes and two IR blasters, so that you could, for example, access both your DVD player and cable box while on the go.

Video quality is fine for an encoded and compressed video file. The Base Station uses the new Advanced Video Codec (AVC), or H.264, for high compression with minimum loss of data, but it will still never match DVD quality. Software settings allow you to select the level of video quality, or to stay with the default "auto" setting that chooses a framerate for you, based on the speed of your connection. You can also choose between 4:3 and 16:9 picture formats, and make the usual picture adjustments you would find on a TV.

If "LocationFree" for you means the ability to send your video to any TV of your choice (rather than merely to computers and handhelds) you might consider the LocationFree TV Box (LF-Box1). This device will serve up whatever signal your Base Station is sending out to any TV to which you connect it.

The Slingbox and SlingLink Turbo really work well to allow me to watch my TV from anywhere. I needed a wireless connection from the TV to the modem in another room and the bridge makes that possible. It is not the easiest set up I have ever done, but the people who answered the phone at Sling were very polite. It took three calls to find someone who could answer my questions in a way I could understand.

My only complaint now is that the virtual remote for TIVO is not fully functional. There are two buttons (TV Input and DVD) that do not work. When I asked the Sling personnel about it (two calls), their response was 'I guess that does not work.' I asked if it might be fixed in the future or if my call information would be forwarded to someone. The response I got was close to a 'You've got to be kidding.'

I do think the product is well worth the price if, like me, you have cable in only one room of your house and would like to watch TV in the other rooms.

Linksys Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming Adapter

First - the product is a bit hard to configure if you do not have a compatible Linksys N router. The CDROM that comes with the WGA600N can only configure it if you have a compatible Linksys router. I have a Apple Airport Extreme N router and had to spend a little time googling to discover that the Reset button on the WGA600N puts it on 192.168.1.250 IP address and that I had to enable static IP in the same subnet on my desktop's interface in order to be able to go to the Web GUI at http://192.168.1.250. After that, it was a breeze to setup. Very easy.

That aside, the best part about WGA600N is that it is very good for streaming HD content over your network. I have Slingbox hooked up to my HD enabled Comcast DVR to enable streaming to my desktop in the other room. The desktop has no wireless card and so it was wired to a NetGear Powerline HDX101. With this setup the HDTV streaming with Slingbox was not impressive - frequent lost packets, not so good speed etc.

But once I hooked the desktop to the WGA600N and had it connect to my extreme N router (Airport shows it connects at 300 rates, whereas my Laptop with WirelessN card connects at 130) no more lost packets, and I get the best streaming speeds, consistently (hovering around 5500Kbps to 6000Kbps).

Overall I am quite happy with its performance - Linksys should fix the configuration utility though, that will save people without Linksys routers some headache for sure.

Sling Media released a software update on October 28, 2008 for SlingCatcher that fixes some critical video streaming quality issues from both Slingbox and SlingProjector. All new customers setting up a SlingCatcher on 10/28/08 or later will receive the new software as part of their first time setup process. Existing customers may download the software update over the Internet directly to their SlingCatcher by going to the Settings menu and selecting Software Update.

SlingProjector users should have a high-performance PC for the best experience. Minimum requirements are a 1.6 Ghz Intel Core Due or 3.0 GHz Pentium IV/Pentium M CPU with Windows XP or Vista 32-bit. 64-bit Windows Vista is not currently supported. The MAC OS is also not currently supported. As with any video or CPU intensive application, virtual operating systems such as Fusion and Parallels are not recommended.

Slingmedia is hitting a home run with this one. I love it, I have a total of three. Two are setup in my home so that can watch my Tivo which is in the basement in the upstairs family room or the master bedroom. It is nice because I can watch recorded shows from either location. I installed the third one at my girlfriend house in Florida and she can now watch recorded shows and can make her own recordings. The picture is great on my home network and there is no notable drop off at my friend's home 700 miles away. BUY, BUY, and BUY.

I have had a slingbox for several years and this is a really nice tool. I can download movies and project them with the correct resolution to TV or save to USB and play them on this box. You can also project most any video to you TV or, connect to your slingbox so you only have to pay for one DVR from the cable or satilite company.
This was the cheapest place to buy it that I found. Fast mailing and met my standards.

I originally bought the slingbox pro last year and have just tried the Hava Platinum HD, so here are my impressions. Setup for the Slingbox Pro-HD is easy. You download the software from their website, install it and it guides you through the process of finding the pro-hd on your network and setting up your devices. BTW - hookup was very easy and straight forward. I connected the slingbox hd to my cable, my router and the power cord. Went to my laptop and took it from there.

In my scenario there are a couple of things to note. I live in NYC and have digital cable with HD. Now, I have to use my cable box to be able to see HD channels. By bypassing the cable box and directly connecting my cable line into the slingbox HD, I can either see all of my regular cable stations (up to channel 99) OR I can see whatever HD channels are free (or over-the-air) in NYC. You can't do both at the same time (at this time, according to their website - that will require a firmware update that is 'high' on their list - I have some history with waiting for them to 'develop' something . . I'll come back to that later).

I set up the slingbox pro HD to look for qualcom HD channels one my cable line and let it do it's thing. It found about 20 HD stations, the best being NBC, CBS, ABC, WB, UPN, PBS, PBSkids. The others are either home-shopping type sites or sports-versions of the big networks. The picture is really great - super clear and with no artifacts - great HD experience at a smaller size. This is VASTLY improved from the regular slingbox pro that I had last year - the picture on that was terrible - fuzzy, grainy - granted it was SD video, but I absolutely hated it.

I then set up the slingbox to look for the regular cable channels. I had to delete the HD setup and have it look up the SD channels. It picked up the channels up to 99. These looked OK and were still better than my memory of the regular slingbox pro. I had one issue in where the picture cut out and had 'low' signal strength. I searched through the forums at slingmedia and apparently this is common to other users and there's no quick fix that anyone has posted.

So, I switched it back to HD.

There is a program guide that looks like every other program guide out there. Nice feature, but only works for the cable channels, at least for me. The HD channels have show up as channel 1.1, 1.3 and so forth - and there is no program guide for those. A bit annoying because I had to figure out what each channel is. This would be OK, but there is considerable lag to changing the channel. You can select a 'quick mode' that basically lowers the quality of your picture while you change channels. It does make it faster, but still not as responsive as changing the channel on your TV. It's probably inherent in the technology.

Pros - easy setup, easy connection, picture looks great. Channel guide if you use regular cable channels

Cons - you can't have both SD and HD channels with a direct cable hookup - you have to go through your cable box, which means you have to set up the IR remote (I didn't do this, but I assume it works as I haven't seen anyone complain out it).

I didn't hook anything else up because it's doubtful that I'd want to stream DVD's or my camcorder's video to a laptop or PC - I would do that directly and have much more control.

Now, one of the reasons I bought the original slingbox pro was because they had advertised that they were working with Microsoft to connect it to Vista so that you could record TV to your computer, thus making it a DVR. That never happened and eventually both MS and Sling media removed those references from their websites. I found that really frustrating because I waited a long time for that. It tought me a lesson to buy technology for what it will do TODAY and not some promised future. All that to say, who knows if they will ever update the firmware to show both SD and HD channels at the same time?

Another thing - when I had the original slingbox pro, I didn't much enjoy watching my home TV remotely when I was traveling or on my phone. It was too jerky and I was worried about maxing out my home/phone bandwidth and data plans, so it was not fun for me. Plus, it killed my battery on my phone too quickly. You may have different needs, likes and dislikes, so take that into account when reading this review. It's unlikely I'll 'sling' my TV, so I'm not reviewing that, but keep in mind that it's the biggest selling point of the slingbox HD and you may really want that.

Overall, the slingbox pro HD does what it is advertised to do - nothing more, nothing less, and what it does it does with good quality.

It is a good DVR. It took a few hours to get used to the user interface, but this was not due so much as Tivo having a bad interface, but it was because it was so different than the Comcast Motorola box that the Tivo replaced. Now that I am used to the UI, I don't know why I did not get one sooner as it is so much better than the Comcast Motorola DVD. Not only that, I suspect it uses a whole lot less power because it is so much cooler to the touch - all in all a big win over my old box. Reading the power consumption stats on the back, the Tivo box uses about 1/4 the power. I like the way it groups recorded shows and the Season Pass concept where you can subscribe to a season. Its find feature is far superior to that of the Comcast Motorola DVR and. The show directory also beats Comcast's offerings hands down - more detail. It does a much better job of not recording 'old' shows than the Comcast DVR even though told the Motorola box to not record old stuff, it did anyway.

Be careful when putting a Tivo product on a Comcast cable. There are a lot of terrible service people at Comcast who don't have a clue. The setup was excrutiatingly painful requiring two trips to a distant Comcast store and much time on the phone. Eventually a Comcast service person came to my house and he had a heck of time getting someone on the phone that knew what they were doing. He did solve the problem. In one case I was told that it was impossible to put a Tivo box on a Comcast cable, but the Comcast employee was dead wrong.

I would have given the Tivo 5 stars if the remote had a back light. It is a dark colored remote and it is worthless in a dark room - no way to see it without turning on an external light source.

The set-up was a little difficult, as the instruction manual is not completely clear for somebody "special" like myself. You need to connect the AP express to your router with an ethernet cord first to program it, and then you place it where you need it (to run wireless).

I read reviews online and saw how people were able to view their home entertainment from anywhere. And since I do a lot of traveling, for myself and for my company. I thought this would be great for me to watch what I have at home, instead of the crappy cable that hotels provide. So I purchased this Slingbox HD and hooked it up per its directions, and then spent the next three days trying to get it to work :(. After the first six hours going through the install program and not getting it to work, I decided to call the company of the product. Well the guy I first got was pretty helpful, but not very knowledgeable. We tried everything that I was doing and a few other ideas. And he even did a remote connection, through another company's program BTW. And still could not get it to broadcast onto my computer that was hooked up to the router via a wire, the same as the slingbox. Finally he said I had to call the company of the modem and talk to them, since he seemed to think there was a problem with the modem. Well I tried to call Brighthouse, and they were even less help. I then gave up and called the company of my router, two days later, which is Linksys. They figured out the problem in thirty minutes. Thirty minutes!! I spent almost six hours on the phone with everyone else, and Linksys knew what the problem was in thirty freaking minutes. Funny,.. but annoying. It seemed the guy at Slingbox inputted the wrong info in my router and modem, and that was why it wasn't broadcasting. So once I got that straightened out, I then tested my laptop and it worked ok. Wasn't the greatest picture and sometimes had limited channels. Had to keep sending a signal to the box to research what was available on my cable box. So I figured maybe I could put up with it if I had to.
Well a week later I take a trip and go to access my box in the room and low and behold the picture quality was even worse than at home (like a low quality youtube video). And to make matters worse, the streaming was horrid!! I had to wait almost 30 minutes to watch a show or anything I had recorded to the cable box. Thirty minutes?!? WTF?!? By the time it got streamed enough to make it watchable, I just didn't care anymore and wanted to just wait till I got home to watch. My experience with the box at that point was terrible to say the least! I tried calling Slingbox from the hotel, and they wouldn't help me till I got back at home where the box was. Why, I dunno.. So a week later I get home and called up you know who again.. And this person I got on the phone was a real A-hole! They basically blamed my connection for the bad signal and streaming issues. And said that maybe the hotel had a slow signal. And that I should call my cable company and purchase a better signal. What?!? I know I don't have a T1 connection and most places I go to don't either. But I feel I have a decent connection, around 7megbits per sec. And the hotels are about as fast. It all just didn't make any sense. Other than a bad product that was poorly conceived. So I hung up on this idiot and called it a day. I have used other programs from my home PC to access files while away, and the upload and download is very quick! Even for 100 Meg files. So since the damn thing didn't work as advertised and as other people are able to get it to work, I sent the stupid thing back. I recommend that if you have a "normal" connection, stay away from this product till they fix this issue!

I have heard of the ROKU for a long time and finally bit the bullet and bought one for personal use. I have 3 kids that are at home during the summer and figured this would be a great device to keep them entertained. True to form, it is perfect...I can rent from Amazon, play from Netflix and voila..my kids have something different to watch at the press of a button.

We have decent cable modem service at home and I have a Apple Dual Band Extreme basestation...so i get pretty decent wireless speeds. However, I noticed that the Roku just didnt perform up to speed on Wireless-N and worked much better with Ethernet and, believe it or not, networking over power lines (netgear ethernet over power adapters used).

Lets face it...there is a lot of data to be downloaded when watching a movie and thus wi-fi may not be the best solution...especially when viewing high definition content. The ROKU is probably not to blame here...but that being said MAKE CERTAIN you have enough bandwidth from your ISP and a GREAT connection from the ROKU location to your router/switch etc.

4/5 for me..because I feel there is a bit of room for improvement.

First let me say I like it, but if you plan on using it with your iPhone and your iPhone has protective hard case (and some rubberized cases) it will not fit into the iPhone unless you remove the case. I solved this by purchasing an adapter for $25-so add that to the cost of the 3G Juice if you use a hard case or a rubberized case in some instances. It definately will not work with an OtterBox case.

If you have an iPhone, you NEED this battery

With the power of the iPhone it should not suprise anyone that the battery life is terrible. I travel frequently and needed a way to charge the iPhone (and iPod Touch) while away from power outlets or USB ports. The 3Gjuice was exactly what I was looking for. The on/off switch allows the device to hold a full charge for months. The slim profile and rugged case are perfect for tossing in my brief case, backpack, or pocket. I bought extras to keep in the car and the office.

OK, let's get the cons out of the way first: This box does not have a slot for CableCards, which means that you are not going to use it to record anything except either OTA digital TV (from an antenna) or the major networks on clear QAM from your cable. That's just the way it is, that's what this box was designed to do, and that cannot be changed. It will not pick up analog or encrypted-digital cable channels. It does not interact with your television at all, unless you are using your TV as a computer monitor. This is NOT the way to convert your old TV to receive digital TV.

So what good is it? You can use it to pick up digital TV from an antenna or unencrypted QAM (usually network) cable signals, and stream to your computer for watching or recording.

I have two of these on my local network. I use them to stream Fox, NBC, ABC, and CBS to my MythTV box, where I record everything broadcast by the Big 4 in primetime onto 2 750GB disks, which hold about 2 weeks of the programming I record. I have demoted my TiVos to cable-channel and backup network use.

If your computer is not dual-core, it's not powerful enough to watch HDTV with (though it will do OK recording, if you have something else to watch with/on).

This unit also has a builtin infrared port that will transmit the codes from your remote control to your computer after you configure it.

It does come with some software, but I don't know what it does, I already had my older HDHomerun hooked up, and just added this one in MythTVSetup. As another reviewer mentioned, there is not a toll-free number to call for support, they use the internet and forums at silicondust. It's worth some time poking around those forums to see what people are doing, and what problems people are having, to see if this item is really what you are looking for.

It does exactly what I want, and I'm considering adding a third one for PBS and CW recording, and to experiment with building a Gray-Hoverman HDTV antenna.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST It is very important to use only RG6 coax cables and 2MHz-rated splitters for most cable HDTV. 1 foot of RG58 between my splitter and my HDHomerun completely destroyed the signal to that input. Don't convince yourself yours is broken until you know your cables are good.

I have this product connected to my directv hd receiver to download VOD content. If the installation software is not able to detect the device during the installation process, then follow these steps (I had to perform these steps when I called Linksys for assistance. I wish they had just documented the steps instead):

1. Quit out of the installation software (keep the adapter connected to your pc)

2. Assign a static IP to your pc (if you do not know how to do this, then call Linksys or google it). The static ip settings should be:
ip: 192.168.1.50
subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1
leave dns settings as is

3. Open up your browser and type http://192.168.1.250 in the address bar. You will now see a log in page

4. Log in with admin/admin

5. Now assign a static IP to the adapter
ip: 192.168.1.250
subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1

6. Now go to the wireless settings tab and enter in your SSID and WEP/WPA Key. Make sure you select the correct authentication type

7. You will now need to reboot the adapter (it will ask you to do so)

8. Once the device is back up, go back to the http://192.168.1.250 page and log back in. Double-check to make sure your settings were entered in correctly. The wireless light should light up on your adapter.

Tip: Before you connect it to your console/receiver, you can test to make sure the adapter can connect to the internet. Switch off your wireless connection on your pc/laptop and connect the adapter to your pc via the ethernet port. Try accessing the internet and if you can, then the adapter is all set.

p.s. the main reason I detailed out the steps for the "advanced setup" is so that people know that it is still a straight-forward process, so no need to be afraid if you won't have the plug-and-play experience.

another tip. if you are still having issues, then try changing the channel on your router (although you should not have to if all your other wireless devices are working well on that channel).

The unit seems to be working as described. It's the only LocationFree station I know of that takes Component cables, and although I could have rigged something up on a previous model, it's nice to just do it right.

The setup wasn't as easy as I had hoped for, but they really do encourage you to call Sony's support for assistance, which I like. So don't worry, call em up and they will get you through it.

I use the device with my PSP and it's quite impressive. The video quality is downright excellent. I was shocked out how well it worked. The "remote control" on the PSP and the PC clients mimicks the actual remote that you have not just in functionality, but in look as well. So you can jump right in and feel comfortable instantly controlling the TV remotely, was very impressed.

The ONLY difficult part with setup was getting my router to let the signal through, although even that wasn't very difficult (Sony help could EASILY walk anyone through this)... after that, the settings and options with the unit are easy to access and for the most part, everything is automatic and simplified. You can easily connect directly to the box via WiFi with the PSP or a computer and manage settings (not much to manage) but if I'm in another room, sometimes I'll just connect dirctly with my PSP and watch the TV.

Again, the picture/sound quality is excellent and providing you have a decent connection, I don't see there being any real issues.

I purchased a video/audio out cable for my PSP and plug it into hotel/friends TV's when I'm out of town and can literally watch my TV from home, on another TV easily anywhere I go.

I highly recommend this unit, it works as it's supposed to do, and because it has PSP functionality, it's much more valuable than a slingbox.

Also, if you are buying this and don't own a PSP - ignore the "gaming" aspects of the PSP, for $169.00 that the PSP sells for, it's worth it's weight in gold as just a simple movie/LocationFree viewing device.

Installation on a normal home network setup is very easy. My setup was a little more complex due to voip router, and 2nd wireless router. Sling has instructions on their web site but I still had to mess around with my settings in order to get it to work. To work on multiple routers you have to do port forwarding on both routers to port 5001. Once I worked this out everything is great.

Video quality is good in the house, haven't tried it from another location. I'm running the Sling AV with Netgear Ethernet power adaptors to my router and then watching TV via wireless to my laptop. Now we can watch TV in any room of the house. My wife loves being able to watch the news in the morning while in the kitchen. She also loves being able to surf while having a show running in a small window on the side.

Control of my Dish DVR is very good. We can manage any feature of our Satelite/DVR box. This will come in handy when we travel as we have our sons Seaseme Street shows on the DVR and now we can take those with us on the road.

Overall, I'm pleased with the Sling AV. It offers good performance at a great price point. Now Sling just needs to get the Mac version out so I can watch TV on my beautiful 15.4 inch Mac Book Pro.

So by now you probably know what this is: A thin ethernet client (read: single purpose computer) that takes video from your home devices and streams it so that you can watch it on a PC or other compatible device anywhere in the world with internet access. You get to control your home device through a virtual remote that sends IR signals through an IR "blaster" cable that connects to the Slingbox and shoots the IR signals to your home device just as if you were at home with a remote.

Looks good on paper. But does it work? Having a lot of experience with streaming video, I was very skeptical. In general, I've found that streaming video eminating from high bandwith commercial servers still results in videos that continually freeze as the buffer runs out. Just how could this Slingbox, which has to squeeze its broadcast signal through the intentionally crippled upload connection of a typical cable connection, possibly deliver the goods to the receiving device in a fashion that allows a good, non-stuttering, non-freezing picture? (In case you don't know, almost all home cable/DSL connections are limited by the providers to about 30kpbs upload speed; compare that to download speeds that range from 768kbps to 3mbps! This is done intentionally so that people don't use their PCs as web servers unless they pay much higher commercial rates).

Anyway, I installed the Slingbox (trivially easy if you have ever installed an A/V component before), installed the software on a PC (Windows 2000 or XP required, sorry you ME, 98 and NT laggards), and let the Slingbox installer do its thing. It asked me some simple questions and I was done.

Installation was quick and painless, but what about the real question: How's the streaming video quality? Well, on my home PC, which obviously has an advantage since it's on the same network as the Slingbox, I can get great streaming video. But that's no real challenge.

So I went over to a friend's house, where there's a kinda miserable DSL connection, installed the Slingbox player, and fired it up...And guess what? After about 30 seconds, where the slingbox player was adjusting the compression/resolution in order to provide stutter free playback, the picture was rock solid. Better than anything I've EVER experienced with video from any web server. And it stayed rock solid. W-O-W!

I'm sold. This product is for real. What a great product.

As for whether you need the Slingbox Pro, or the cheaper models. The pro adds capacity for multiple inputs, an integrated analogue video tuner (so you can watch EITHER cable or your attached DVR/VCR/DVD player/cable box/etc), and the abilty to stream the output of a HD (high definition) device. HOWEVER, be aware that to use the HD input to the Slingbox, you need a proprietary cable that is NOT included in the package (and which will set you back about $50). That kinda sucks, and I almost docked the unit one star for that bit of bait and switch (the box touts its high definition capabilities but doesn't really say that it will cost you $50 more to use them), but I'm so happy with the performance of the box in general that I'll let that slide...

The TiVo service keeps track of the latest TV schedule, and automatically records every episode of your favorite shows, even if the day or time they air changes. All you do is find the show you want by searching or browsing the TV listings, and then specify whether you want to record all episodes or just the new ones.

Record Two Shows at Once
TiVo DVRs have two tuners, so they can record two different TV shows at the same time. You can even play back a third show that you’ve already saved while two new shows are recording.

Control live or recorded shows
TiVo DVRs can: Pause live or recorded shows (live TV can stay paused for 30 minutes), Rewind (3 different speeds), fast-forward (3 different speeds), instant replay, slow motion, frame forward, frame reverse, skip-to-tick (jump ahead or back in 15 minute increments in recorded shows), jump to the beginning of a show, the end of a show, or the point being broadcast live at that moment.

Search for shows
You can search for shows with a specific word in the title or episode description, like "House". You can search for shows in a particular category, like “Cooking” shows about "Chocolate", or "Football" programs with "Giants". You can even find every movie with Johnny Depp, or every movie directed by Steven Spielberg. If it is available on your television lineup, the TiVo service can find it and record it for you.

Record by actor, director, or keyword
Use a TiVo WishList search to find every show with your favorite actor, director, keyword, or sports team. Your TiVo DVR will save your search, and if you like, automatically record every new show that matches it.

TiVo Suggestions
TiVo Suggestions are personalized shows selected to match your preferences. Any time you watch a live TV or recorded show, or see something you like or don’t like in the Guide, you can rate that show by using the THUMBS UP or the THUMBS DOWN buttons on your remote control. When the TiVo DVR has empty space, it will automatically record shows that are liked by other people who like the same shows you do. This is an excellent way to discover new shows that may interest you. TiVo Suggestions never replace any shows you request, or prevent them from being recorded. Suggestions are always the first programs to be deleted when it’s time for one of your shows to record.

Pre-approve kids TV
When you enable KidZone on your TiVo DVR, you can select the programs and channels that your children can watch. You can also block specific shows on channels that you have approved, to keep your kids from watching those shows you just can’t stand. When you let your children watch TV you’ll be comfortable knowing they can only get to shows you’ve approved.

Schedule shows online
You can search for TV shows by title, category, keyword, or person in the Find TV shows section of tivo.com. When you’ve found the show you want to record, simply log in to your tivo.com account, select the DVR you want to set to record, and decide whether you want to record just that episode or every episode of the series. You have access to the same settings as you do when you set up a recording on the DVR itself. You will receive one email confirmation when your request is received and a second one when the DVR has reported back whether your show will record.

Save shows to a DVD

Transfer shows between two TiVo DVRs
If you have more than one TiVo DVR with TiVo service on your home network , you can transfer shows between the two DVRs. That way you can start watching a show in the living room and finish it in the bedroom. High-definition shows can only transfer between two HD-compatible TiVo DVRs. Standard definition shows can transfer between all Series2, HD, and Series3 DVRs. Video downloads and any shows that have been protected by the copyright holder can not be transferred. If you don’t have a home network, you can directly connect two DVRs together by creating a peer-to-peer network.

If you have MP3 music files on your PC or Mac, you can stream them to your network-connected TiVo DVR for playback through your TV or home entertainment system. Firstoff, I would say this device does what it is supposed to. Having used several powerline products like this, I will say that this one performs about as well as competing units. That said, there are few caveats I would point out. First, you're only going to get acceptable throughput when both sides of the link are on the same household circuit. This is especially true with older homes who may have gone through electrical upgrades (like mine). Also, your throughput will suffer when you use other electrical devices on the circuit. For example, my video gets choppy whenever someone turns on/off the bathroom light which is adjacent to the bedroom where I have this unit located. For basic internet usage this is not a big deal, but if you're streaming video to a media center like I am, it is somewhat of an annoyance.

A must have for using multiple sources, not worth it for HD alone

Don't buy the Sling HD connect cable - more accurately referred to as a component video adapter - if you're eager to get your Slingbox Pro broadcasting HD quality, since it won't do that. Instead, buy it if you want to connect multiple sources to your Slingbox, since the 4-way IR blaster that's included means you can actually take advantage of the full input capability of the Pro. I take a star off on both how this has been mismarketed and how it should have been included with the Pro, but it's a must have if you're going to truly take advantage of the Pro's capabilities.

The Slingbox is a really neat toy, but they've done a semi-unethical job positioning the Pro and this adapter as HD "compatible" in an attempt to catch on to the HD upgrade wave. Some of it isn't their fault, as bandwidth is a huge issue. Think of it this way: compressed high definition video in 1080i runs somewhere in the 8-10 GB/hour range, with uncompressed video directly from over-the-air stations running quite a bit higher. Even the fastest current cable modems - let alone DSL - would have problems keeping up with that, and with uploading generally limited to 1/10th that speed to prevent you from running a file server, it's a moot issue, which is why the Slingbox limits remote uploads to 320x240. And while you can get closer to the required speed on a LAN and the Pro transmits 640x480 video over it, it'd probably take $600 more of hardware for the Slingbox to process a 1080i stream - and while Slingbox is neat, it's certainly not $1000 neat.

So the Slingbox downrezzes any HD signal you send into it. Whether or not connecting a HD component to this adapter results in improved output depends a whole lot on how well your DVR or TV already downrezzes to 480i, which also makes sense: an expensive piece of hardware like that generally has better electronics to do so. Generally, the best reason to buy this for the HD input capability alone is if you have an oddball HD source, like my DVHS VCR which doesn't display menus in certain resolutions. Otherwise, it's a crapshoot as to whether or not you'll get improved video even within your LAN. (Outside of it you probably won't notice the difference much either way.) And by the way, even though the port looks like it accepts an HDMI input, the adapter only accepts component video inputs - although at least it includes a set of component video cables so you can pass through the signal if you need to without spending any more than you already have.

The reason you buy this, though, is that the Pro is very good at streaming 4 separate devices - but while you can connect 3 devices without this item, you can only control 2 with the IR blaster that comes with the Pro. I spent a while trying to figure out a workaround for this, looking into such things as 3/32" Y cable splitters connecting to 1/8" plugs and looking into finding another brand of IR blasters since Sling won't sell you a second one. Then I hit my head against the wall once I realized this includes a 4-prong IR blaster. Basically, buy this cable set if you plan on taking full advantage of the Pro's capabilities to remotely control more than 2 devices - or get a headache.

No real excuse for Sling Media not to include this with the Pro and not to explain it to the consumer properly, but such is life.
